Military Humor

I haven't been off-base this week, unfortunately, but I have gotten out of the house around base. Today is Friday. The sun is out (for a change) and so are the softball players. My husband and I went out to dinner (Friday night is date night, after all) and afterwards went for a walk around the base. Though you may hear me complain about the lack of activities on base, they do have two very nice baseball fields.

We managed to catch two softball games before our movie started, and it is a good thing we did. Not only were we surprised by roaring thunder without a drop of rain (one of the interesting traits of Japan), but saw a very fun local creature, a Japanese Horseshoe Bat. Actually, we saw many. However, nobody is afraid of bats in Japan because it is a rabies-free country (don't ask about the experience of bringing a cat to this country). To top the night off, before we even got to the movie, we saw something rarely seen in real life--two men on a softball team colliding head-on while chasing a ball. Now, I'm very glad the men were alright after this bloody incident, but we couldn't help but laugh and wish we had a camera for the event. It was one of those "wow" circumstances that you never really expect to see in person. The team which had the collision ended up winning the game in over time (softball is timed, unlike baseball). I guess it was a good-luck charm.

After those scenes, Talladega Nights was not quite as exciting as I would have hoped, but Will Ferrell gave us a good laugh. Since we were on-base, we actually got to watch the movies in English without having to travel to Tokyo. After the movie, the temperature outside was just perfect and it was finally clear enough out to see a few stars, so we strolled around in the American summer evening tradition. I hope to bring you more excitement from Japan soon!
